All nurses (except the head male nurse) and female domestics are provided with free board and lodging (which is why their salaries seem rather lower than expected). The medical superintendent, clerk & steward, resident engineer and farm bailiff (who is also caretaker of the Middlesbrough Fever Hospital) are provided with houses and the deputy medical superintendent with lodgings.
Wages of mental hospital nurses and domestic staff are set at national level, so these salary levels are standard throughout the country (although varying according to the size and location of the hospital).
